Tattoo Aftercare
The surface of your skin usually heals in 2–3 weeks, but deeper layers can take up to 6 months to fully recover.
Healing Timeline
After getting a tattoo, the outer layer of skin (the part you can see) will typically heal within 2 to 3 weeks.
Even if it looks and feels healed, the skin below can take up to 6 months to truly heal.
Healing can take longer for large pieces. Picking scabs, under-moisturizing, skipping SPF, or using alcohol-based lotions can slow the process.
Aftercare With Derm Shield
- Reduces risk of contaminants entering the fresh tattoo.
- Protects from friction and shear (clothing, sheets, movement).
- Helps the body keep the area moisturized.
- Can reduce the need for frequent washing and ointment during wear.
Showering with Derm Shield
Yes, you can shower normally. It’s waterproof, but excessive water exposure can weaken the adhesive.
Avoid swimming and soaking.
How long to keep it on
Keep Derm Shield on for a minimum of 4–5 days and a maximum of 7 days.
The longer you can comfortably keep it on, the more healing happens while bandaged.
How to remove Derm Shield
The shower is the best place to remove it. Running water helps loosen the adhesive and relax the skin.
Removing it dry may cause discomfort and added trauma.
- Find an edge of the bandage and pull it back over itself in the direction of natural hair growth.
- Discard the used bandage and wash the tattoo with a mild, fragrance-free soap.
- Let it air dry or pat dry with a clean towel.
- Optional: apply a thin layer of aftercare product. If you have oily skin or live in a humid climate, you may skip.
Otherwise, use a thin layer of petroleum-free moisturizer to reduce dryness and itching.
Standard Aftercare (No Derm Shield)
You can leave it on overnight to prevent sticking to clothing and sheets.
- Gently remove the bandage.
- Wash with warm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap.
- Pat dry (don’t rub) with a clean paper towel or a clean, unused bath towel.
If you use a towel, use a fresh one each time. Do not reuse the same towel. - Do not re-bandage.
- Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free lotion (example: Lubriderm) or ointment (example: Aquaphor) 2–3 times daily.
Use it sparingly. If lotion sits on the tattoo, it’s too much. Blot excess with a clean paper towel.
What to expect
- In 2–3 days, your tattoo may begin to flake or scab. Do not pick.
- Showering is okay. Always wash your hands before touching your tattoo.
- Avoid pools, baths, hot tubs, lakes, and soaking for at least 2 weeks.
- Avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds while healing.
Healing Faster
The healthier you are, the faster you heal. Drink plenty of water.
